Move a Window Thats Off Screen

Need to move a window from one screen to another, or its sitting on a non-existent screen after you unplugged the monitor? Here are a few ways to move it back...

Method 1: Keyboard

This usually works on the most recent Win versions

  1. Focus the app
    1. Alt + Tab to select the off-screen window
  2. Move it with the keyboard
    1. Press Alt + Space to open the window's system menu (you won't see it, but it's there)
    2. Press M (for Move)
    3. Use the arrow keys (usually left or right) to start moving the window (hold the key down)
    4. Once it starts moving, just wiggle the mouse and the window should snap over to your cursor

Method 2: Cascade the Windows

Quick and dirty catch-all

  1. Right click on the taskbar (or Ctl+ Shift + Right Click if using W11)
  2. Choose Cascade windows
  3. Boom! All windows are re-stacked on the current screen

Method 3: Reset Window Position with Snap

Windows 10/11 power move. This will snap the window to the current screen, aligned left or right

  1. Focus on the lost app (Alt + Tab again)
  2. Hit Win + Left Arrow or Win + Right Arrow
