Voice Announcement Files for APX

This was originally a 2 part video on my YT channel (part 1, part 2) but here I have combined them into one document for ease of use.

Generating the Audio Files

For generating the audio files, a simple voice recorder will work. You can also use some kind of text-to-speech (TTS) generator. I use Speech2Go with the Samantha voice package for this.

The audio files you produce must meet the following criteria in order for the VA converter, and ultimately CPS to use them:

.wav Format
56kb or Less in Size
4 Seconds or Less Long
8k hz, 16 Bit Mono Format

I've noticed that audio files that are close to the 4 second length, CPS doesn't like it. So if you can, keep your audio files 3 seconds long or less.

Dump all the .wav files you've created into a single folder somewhere on your computer, and remember where that folder is.

Create the MVA Files in CPS & Programming The Radio

  1. Fire up APX CPS
  2. Power on, and connect your radio via cable
  3. Tools - VA Converter Utility
  4. Hit the Browse button to navigate/select the folder that contains your recorded audio files from Part 1
  5. Select the files you want to convert (it's multi-select)
  6. Select the final destination for the converted files by hitting the second browse button
  7. Hit the Convert Button
  8. Close the VA Converter Utility
  9. Voice Announcement List - Add your files by hitting the + button to add records
    1. In the file selector that pops up, select your audio file(s) to add - you can multi-select and it will add the appropriate number of records for the files you selected
  10. Assign the files to things such as Zone or Channel by navigating to the appropriate area in CPS
  11. Save your codeplug, and send it to the radio!
  12. Profit
